Let me Tell You About Twirly Whirly

Let me Tell You About Twirly Whirly

It was summertime when I designed Twirly Whirly. I was thinking about carnivals with their rides that spin, the brightly colored lights that come on after dark, and the spirited excitement of those who attend.   The colors chosen are loud and happy, uplifting and energetic.  The blocks twist and turn, creating movement much like one of those carnival rides.  One of the interesting and fun things about this quilt is that there is no true up, down, left or right.

I chose Art Gallery Solids for my fabric selections.  The foreground is made up of Raspberry Rose, Burnt Orange, Maldives, Turmeric, Canary, and Mirage Blue.  The background is Celestial.  The binding is done in Nebula, and as you can see, there are scraps added in that were left over from the foreground fabric to make it a little more fun.

Twirly Whirly’s foreground and background create a unique opportunity to play with free motion or computerized quilting.  While the cover quilt has been quilted with an E2E design, there are plans for future versions where the blocks and background will be more interesting with free motion or a computerized design to fit those spaces.  So, stay tuned for those!

I created this design a few years ago while taking the Quilt Pattern Writing course offered by Elizabeth Chappell of Quilters Candy.  So, it just seemed obvious to have this be the first quilt released.  It is so wonderful to finally be getting it out into the world and into your hands!
