There are so many unique and interesting tools for quilting out there, but you really only need the basics. Start with these, and as you progress on your journey, you will find more and more tools that meet your specific needs. Here is a list of essential quilting supplies to get you started on your quilting journey:
Basic Tools & Equipment
- Sewing Machine – A basic machine with a straight stitch is enough to start.
- Rotary Cutter – 45mm is a versatile size.

Self-Healing Cutting Mat – Get one large enough to accommodate your project and your quilting ruler.

Acrylic Quilting Rulers – A 6" x 24" ruler is a must-have, but there are many other sizes available to fit your needs.
- Scissors – Fabric scissors and small thread snips
Fabric & Thread
- 100% Cotton Fabric – Quilting cotton is best.

Thread – 100% cotton or polyester in colors that fit your project. Neutrals are always in and so versatile.
Measuring & Marking Tools

Seam Gauge or Tape Measure – For precise measurements.
- Fabric Marking Pen/Pencil – Water-soluble or air-erasable.
Pins & Clips
- Quilting Pins – Glass-head or flower-head pins work well.
- Wonder Clips – Great for binding and holding together thicker layers.
Ironing & Pressing
- Iron – A steam iron helps with crisp seams.
- Ironing Board or Wool Pressing Mat – A wool mat retains heat for better pressing.
Batting & Backing

Quilt Batting – There are many varieties to choose from, find one that fits the needs of your project.

Backing Fabric – This should be 4-6 inches larger on all sides than the quilt top. You can either sew two pieces together to create one piece large enough to fit as your backing or purchase wide-back fabric.
Piecing & Quilting Supplies
- 1/4" Quilting Foot – Helps achieve accurate seam allowances.
- Walking Foot – Useful for straight-line quilting.
- Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) Foot – If you plan to try free motion quilting.
Binding & Finishing
- Wonder Clips – Holds binding in place.
